Portland strikes gold again with another glorious indie record by the Horse Feathers. The folk inspired melodies by this band are felt as lingering and bittersweet. And certainly-Cynic’s New Year is quite a fitting title for the pairing of slightly bitter croonings against the backdrop of folk-acoustic beauty.
Seven Nation Army | Ben L’Oncle Soul
Songs that provide as spectacular a case of ear-worm as Seven Nation Army are certainly not easy to come by. So, of course, there are bound to be questions with any band that attempts to do justice to this magnificent rock classic. However (a very happily however-) Ben rises above and beyond to bring THE most fantastic rendition of Seven Nation I have yet heard; providing the perfect amount of soul & rock, and even hints of the signature big band swing. Brace yourselves for the best 3 minutes of music you will experience all day.
Perfect for: sunglasses sporting, headphone wearing city times; anytime the need arises for superior music, embracing your inner rock n roll superstar
Cherry Blossoms | Night Beds
I wish this latest discovery of the musical genius of Night Beds was a product of my own music-searching labor. The very reason I have not posted in quite a while might just be because I am fantastically glued to their latest album, Country Sleep. The album is steeped in a very authentic lovesickness prone to its singer-songwriter genre. Cherry Blossoms is the standout in my opinion; carrying an emotional vocal build supported by a melancholy, beautiful melody. It succeeds in creating the opportunity for its listener to feel-which is essentially the one of the greatest successes of a musical artist. Highly recommended, at the risk of falling into musical bliss.
Perfect for: spring evenings, stereotypical-but-beautiful windy roads, quiet Northwest days, always.
My Joy | Leela James
Original soul is how one could describe the rich, striking vocals of singer-songwriter Miss Leela James. Her debut album, A Change Is Gonna Come, is a simple, wonderful collection, paying homeage to the flavor and richness of the eras of soul/funk before. (Praise is not solely based on the fact I am in love with the lyrics of Change Is Gonna Come…but…) The best part of her fantastic renditions on songs is the perfect balance of range and ease in her voice-if it doesn’t get your head bobbin’ and feet dancin’, well! Let’s stop here before my awkward white girl dancing gets out of hand.
Perfect for: starting your morning with a lil groove, cooking up a storm, really actually anytime.
Breezeblocks | Alt-J
Lately there has been a surplus of fantastic music from the London scene; the latest favorite being that of indie-rock Alt-J. Alternative doesn’t quite describe their category of songs that channel a quirky dub-pop, experimental/electronic sound. If you end up enjoying Breezeblocks half as much as I do, you are in for quite a good time!
Perfect for: sparking creativity, being that car at stop lights, energetic walks, paired with cool-kid sunglasses

Daydream | Beach Fossils
This Brooklyn based indie-rock band is a great kick off for (preparing for) summer! Daydream is quite the appropriate title for the fantastically layered hazy vocals over a rock n roll vibe. They have found the essence of laid back summer with their sound-and although I would admit the only drawback is that this similar vibe is prominent in many of their tracks-it is a signature that works. Beach Fossils are most certainly the cool kids on the indie block.
Perfect for: laid-back parties, summer mornings, barbeques, beach scenes in general
Hello Again | Charlene Soraia
There are likes, and there are obsessions; and this little song might be verging on the latter. Charlene’s voice is essentially divine, and this live version of Hello Again simply proves her talent can do no wrong. In fact, I might love it even more than the beautiful studio version. Her other work as a London-based singer-songwriter is in all ways fantastic, but this song is a standout in its simplicity, structure, and beauty. (My fan girl ways can continue, but I will cut myself off right about here.)
Perfect for: springtime mornings, French cafes, flower markets
Orchard | The Honey Trees
I am a fan of beautiful music. Not the cheap version of pretty, but the way music is supposed to feel and radiate when you experience it. Every now and again I am lucky to stumble across that sort of music, the kind that is most lovely in its simplicity. The Honey Trees, local to California, echo this in their opener, Orchard. Savor and enjoy.
Perfect for: fans of Eisley, fireside evenings, picture boxes

Love Is All I Got | Crystal Fighters
This quirky, love-struck video is brought by the band Crystal Fighters; an electronic/alternative group based in the UK (read: instant cool factor.) Although I haven’t heard their other work, one of their latest singles, Love Is All I Got, blends dance electronics with a melody that is the standout element of the entire video. While it is a fantastic video of itself, the music carrying it will be sure to find it’s way into my go to tunes.
Perfect for: puttin on the dance moves, anytime feel good parties, driving in sunshine, paired with a strong cup of coffeeSource: http
Le Bleu et I’Ether | Stranded Horse
Today’s acoustic favorite comes from none other than Paris, which might mean this song could easily become a tried and true favorite in my library. Don’t ask me what the lyrics mean, or what that instrument is called. (Guitar? Harp?-Blends perfectly with the smoky, beautiful French vocals) Just prepare to be mesmerized by this little video that might leave you trapped in the wonderful, lost feeling of a dreamy afternoon.
Perfect for: morning music, when you want to impress others with your music collection, raining days in general, with freshly brewed tea
